Finding #3 Probable Safety 2 Contrast/Tension

The Miracle He Refused to Repeat

When asked for a sign from heaven, Jesus refused — but he had performed signs from heaven repeatedly.

In Matthew 16:1–4 and Mark 8:11–12, the Pharisees and Sadducees request 'a sign from heaven.' Jesus refuses: 'A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas.' This refusal is striking because the preceding chapters of Matthew include the feeding of the five thousand, walking on water, and multiple healings. He had performed public signs continuously. The request is denied specifically when it comes as a test or demand. The pattern holds: signs occur in contexts of genuine need or faith; they are refused when demanded as proof. Luke 23:8–9 shows Herod hoping to see a miracle and Jesus saying nothing to him at all.

Evidence Notes

Refusal to give sign on demand appears in Matthew and Mark. Contrast with immediate preceding miracle accounts in both gospels.
